The Quest for Roti & Curry

We’d been craving roti and curry, and lucky for us, one of the highest-rated spots in the area was right across the street from where we were staying. Honestly, we couldn’t have picked a better location because most of the best-rated restaurants are within walking distance – which is either a sign we’re staying in a foodie hotspot or we just lucked out. Either way, I’m not complaining.

Originally, I had my heart set on Roti Chaofa Phuket, but it’s closed for Ramadan, and from what I can tell, it’s not opening at all while we’re in town. Gutted. From everything I’ve read, it’s supposed to be the best roti spot in Phuket. But hey, Sabainang Café might be the next best?

First Impressions – Tourist Trap Vibes?

Walking in, I immediately had that uh-oh feeling—you know, when a place feels a little too polished, a little too catered to tourists? I started to wonder if the high Google rating was just wishful thinking.

But hey, we were already here, so we ordered:

Roti with Thai Green Curry
Roti with Massaman Chicken Curry

And then? The food arrived.

The Thai Green Curry – An Instant Game Changer

WOW. Actually, wow.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Thai Green Curry—mostly because I’ve never liked coriander (it’s always tasted like soap to me).

But this? This was something else.

Somehow, the coriander here just tastes differentfresher, milder, more balanced. Maybe my taste buds are evolving, maybe it’s the quality of the ingredients, maybe it’s just Thailand. Either way, I actually like coriander now, which is a sentence I never thought I’d say.

The curry itself was perfectly balanced – creamy, fragrant, with just the right amount of richness. Definitely the best of the two curries.

The Massaman Curry – Good, but Forgettable

The Chicken Massaman? Decent. But if the green curry was an event, this was just… fine. Nothing bad about it, but nothing particularly memorable either. If you love Massaman, you’ll probably enjoy it, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

The Roti – Delicious, But Heavy

I love flaky, crispy, slightly chewy roti, and this one delivered on flavor. The problem? It was so greasy.

It doesn’t look like much when it arrives, but there’s just so much of it, and once you factor in the heavy oils, it quickly becomes a bit of a chore to eat.

Note to self: One roti is more than enough for two people.

The Spice Level – Why Won’t They Believe Me?

Once again, I did my usual “Phet Mak Mak” (very very spicy) request.

Once again, it came out… mild.

I swear, I’m being racially profiled everywhere. No one believes I can handle spice! Just once, I’d love for them to actually listen instead of assuming I can’t take the heat.

Maybe I just don’t look like a guy who can handle his chilli…

The Vibe – Sun, Spice, and Ashleigh’s Yellow Dress

Beyond the food, the atmosphere was pretty nice—good for a casual meal, nothing too fancy.

Ashleigh wore her new yellow dress from Tangerine today, and she looked like an absolute ray of sunshine—which felt appropriate on such a beautifully sunny Phuket day.

Final Verdict – Worth It?

If you’re already nearby and want a really good Thai Green Curry, this is a solid choice.
But if you’re looking for something truly special or worth a detour, I’d say keep searching.
